Laser Engraver for Leather: Diode vs CO2 and Material Safety
Summary
Both diode and CO2 lasers appear in Trotec's leather-processing chart, but that does not make every leather suitable. Start with the material's confirmed composition and your machine manufacturer's guidance. Leather containing chromium (VI), PVC-containing synthetic leather, and hides of unknown composition should stay out of the machine.
Diode or CO2 for leather?
Trotec lists leather for both engraving and cutting with diode and CO2 lasers. That chart alone does not establish a best machine, wattage, or cutting thickness for your leather. Confirm that the particular leather and intended operation are supported before comparing machines.
Engraving and cutting are separate checks. For example, xTool's M2 chart permits engraving PU leather but not cutting it; that is guidance for that machine, not permission to process any PU leather on any laser.
Chromium, PVC, and unknown hides
Trotec's material chart lists leather as suitable for engraving and cutting on CO2 and diode lasers. Its separate list of unsuitable materials names "leather and artificial leather that contains chromium (VI)," because processing it releases dangerous gases or dust that can harm the operator and the machine.
Say a customer wants initials on a PU leather key fob. xTool's material cheat sheet for the M2 marks PU leather as fine to engrave and not to cut. The same sheet says PVC-containing material must never be lasered and lists leather or foam of unknown composition among the materials to avoid.
The D1 Pro guide says two things
The safety guide for xTool's D1 Pro diode machine puts "leather, artificial leather" in the same row as PVC and vinyl and advises against cutting it. Further down the same page, it says thin leather can be cut, with some charring at the edges.
