Does Clear or Colored Acrylic Change Which Laser Cutter You Need?

Published · By the Laser Lineup editors

Summary

Yes. For clear acrylic you want CO2, because blue diode light passes through clear sheet without leaving a mark. Dark opaque acrylic can be cut with a diode, but each color absorbs the light differently, so settings change from sheet to sheet.

Clear sheet

xTool's support article on high-transmittance materials says CO2 processes acrylic normally, while blue-light engraving on clear acrylic "has no visible effect." It offers two workarounds, masking tape on top or a metal business card underneath. Both help you mark the surface. Neither lets you cut clear parts out. The P2, xTool's CO2 machine, is listed as cutting transparent acrylic up to 20 mm thick.

Colored sheet

Opaque colored sheet works with a diode, though each color behaves a little differently. xTool's material guide notes that black materials absorb more laser energy at most wavelengths and white materials reflect more than other colors, and its beginner's guide to acrylic tells users to adjust parameters by color. Mirror acrylic gets engraved from the back, with the design flipped.

For blue-light work, xTool says to peel off the protective film, including anti-scratch and iridescent films. Burning film throws smoke and dust onto the lens and laser window. Wipe the sheet with anhydrous ethanol or a mild cleaner once the film is off.

Edge problems and xTool's fixes

ProblemWhat xTool suggests
Black edgesUse air assist, lower the focus slightly, calibrate the spot
BurrsCheck the focus position, raise the air pressure
Irritating smellRun the exhaust and wear a mask (the exhaust does the real work by moving smoke out of the room; a mask is only a backup)
