How Portable Is a "Portable" Laser Engraver, Really?

Published · By the Laser Lineup editors

Summary

The LaserPecker LP5's laser unit weighs 3.36 kg, and with its electric stand and protective cover the kit comes to 6.02 kg. The lightest model in the lineup, the 1.69 kg LP1 Pro, has a 0.5W blue laser, while the LP5 carries a 20W diode and a 20W fiber laser.

What the kit weighs

LaserPecker's comparison chart lists total weights, accessories included, of 1.69 kg for the LP1 Pro, 2.72 kg for the LP2, 3.33 kg for the LP3, 4 kg for the LP4, and 6.02 kg for the LP5. The LP5 figure is a 3.36 kg laser unit, a 2.28 kg electric stand, and a 0.38 kg conical protective cover.

The LP1 Pro has a 0.5W blue laser, the LP2 5W blue, the LP3 1W infrared, the LP4 a 10W diode with 2W infrared, and the LP5 a 20W diode with a 20W fiber laser. On the LP5, the working area is a 120 × 160 mm ellipse, a 100 × 100 mm square, or 160 × 300 mm with the slide extension.

Engraving in front of customers

At a market stall or pop-up, the aisle, the airflow, and the nearest outlet change with every venue, and customers stand close enough to watch the beam work. LaserPecker shows the LP5 being used handheld, and it also sells a separate safety enclosure and air purifier. The enclosure and the protective cover both carry sensors that stop the laser when opened. Run handheld, the LP5's 20W fiber beam at 1064 nm is invisible, so nothing tells you or a customer when it's firing: wear safety glasses rated for both of its wavelengths, give a pair to anyone standing close, and prefer the enclosure where the aisle is tight.
