Should You Buy an OMTech Galvo or MOPA Fiber Laser, and Do You Need Autofocus?

Published · By the Laser Lineup editors

Summary

Choose a Galvo if you mostly mark logos, text, and serial numbers on metal. Choose a MOPA if you also want color on stainless steel or deep engraving. OMTech frames them the same way: Galvo for fast, precise metal marking, MOPA as "up to 100W for color and deep engraving." Autofocus is a separate option from the laser source. It saves refocusing when you work through parts of different heights, and OMTech sells autofocus versions such as the MOPA 60W Autofocus.

Three fiber lines

OMTech's store splits its fiber lasers into Galvo (fast, precise metal marking), MOPA (up to 100W for color and deep engraving), and Solis Duo (metal and non-metal in one machine). For MOPA, OMTech says its 30W, 60W, and 100W systems let you adjust heat input precisely. All of them are open galvo systems with an invisible 1064 nm beam, so safety glasses with an optical density rated for 1064 nm belong in the setup for the operator and anyone else in the room.

MOPA models and prices

The MOPA machines differ in power, work area, and form factor. Store prices on September 23, 2026:

MOPA 30W Integrated5.9" × 5.9"$2,599.99
MOPA 60W Integrated5.9" × 5.9"$3,599.99
MOPA 60W Autofocus—$3,599.99

MOPA 100W Split6.9" × 6.9"$5,899.99 (pre-order, ships Sept. 30)

These were sale prices. At 60W, the split model gains an inch on each side of the work area and costs $500 more than the integrated one. Every package of the MOPA 60W Autofocus included a LightBurn license.

Rotary problems in OMTech's support pages

OMTech sorts its fiber troubleshooting articles into four machine types: integrated and split, each in standard fiber and MOPA versions. For rotaries, the articles cover distorted patterns, rotation in the wrong direction, and a roller that won't turn on split machines.
